Japan eSIM Complete Guide:
Connect before you land.

By 2026, physical SIM cards are becoming obsolete for travelers. This guide explains exactly what an eSIM is, how to check if your phone works, and which plan to choose for your trip.

General guidance only — entry requirements change frequently. Verify with official Japanese government sources before traveling.

1. What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of swapping physical plastic cards, you simply download a profile via a QR code.

Dual-SIM Ready

Keep your home SIM active for 2FA texts while using Japan data.

Instant Delivery

Receive your QR code via email instantly—no airport lines.

2. CRITICAL: Will it work?

Before buying, you must confirm two things:

A. Device is "Unlocked"

If your phone is on a payment plan with a carrier (AT&T, Verizon, etc.), it might be locked.
Check: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock (iPhone).

B. Hardware Support

Most phones since 2020 support eSIM.
Check: Dial *#06# on your phone. If you see an "EID" number, you are eSIM compatible.

3. What about phone calls?

90% of travel eSIMs are Data-Only. They do not come with a +81 phone number.

Need to call a restaurant/hotel?

Use Skype Out or Viber Out. You can load $5 of credit and call any Japanese landline for cents per minute.

Need a real +81 number?

Most tourists don't need this. If you do (e.g., for concert tickets), you must choose Mobal and undergo identity verification (required by Japanese law).

4. Which eSIM should I choose?
