Japan Visa Guide:
Do you need one?

Japan's visa requirements depend on your nationality, the purpose of your visit, and the length of your stay. Here is a summary of the official rules from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

General guidance only — entry requirements change frequently. Verify with official Japanese government sources before traveling.

1. Visa Exemptions (Short-term)

Citizens of many countries (including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU nations) do not need a visa for short-term stays (usually up to 90 days) for tourism, business, or visiting family.

Tourism & Business

Activities that do not involve receiving remuneration (payment) in Japan.

90-Day Limit

In most cases, you can stay for up to 90 days without a visa.

* Note: Some countries have 15 or 30-day limits. Always check the current list on the MOFA website.

2. JAPAN eVISA (Online System)

Apply online for short-term tourism

If your nationality requires a visa for tourism, you may be eligible to use the JAPAN eVISA system to apply online instead of visiting an embassy.

  • Available for tourism stays up to 90 days.
  • Applicants must be residing in eligible countries/regions.
  • Digital visa is issued — no sticker in your passport.
