IC Card Guide:
Suica, ICOCA & Welcome Suica

In 2026, Japans transport infrastructure is a mix of mobile apps and physical cards. Whether you use iPhone or Android, this guide helps you navigate the "FeliCa barrier" and get moving instantly.

General guidance only — entry requirements change frequently. Verify with official Japanese government sources before traveling.

1. Which card should you choose?

TypeBest ForHow to get
Welcome Suica MobileiPhone users (Tourists)App Store. No lines at airport.
Mobile Suica / ICOCAFrequent visitorsApple / Google Wallet directly.
Welcome Suica (Physical)Short-term non-iPhone usersAirport vending machines. 28-day limit.
Regular Suica / ICOCAEveryone elseStation machines. ¥500 deposit. 10-year validity.

* Note: The semiconductor shortage ended in March 2025. Physical cards are now fully available at all major stations.

2. iPhone vs. Android: The "FeliCa Barrier"

🍏

iPhone (Easy)

All iPhones from 8 onwards support Japanese IC cards. Open Wallet → tap +Transit CardSuica/ICOCA.

💡 Power reserve: Even if your battery dies, "Express Mode" lets you tap through gates for a few hours.
🤖

Android (Difficult)

Warning: Androids bought outside Japan usually lack the FeliCa chip needed. Google Pay will not let you add a Suica.

Don't waste time troubleshooting — simply buy a physical card at the station. It is the most reliable way for Android users.

3. How to Top Up (Charge)

Option A: Via App (Mobile only)

Charge instantly using your registered credit card in Apple Wallet. If your Visa/Mastercard is rejected, charging through Apple Pay usually fixes the issue.

Option B: With Cash (Mobile & Physical)

Go to any 7-Bank (7-Eleven) or Lawson Bank ATM. Place your phone or card on the reader, select "Charge," and insert Yen.

💡 As of late 2026, the Suica charge limit is being increased from ¥20,000 to ¥300,000 for verified users.

4. Where to use it?

Beyond trains and buses, IC cards are accepted at almost every convenience store, drug store, and vending machine in Japan.

1

Tell the clerk: "Suica de" (By Suica) or "ICOCA de".

2

Tap your device or card on the blue glowing reader.

3

Wait for the "Sharin!" chime — you're done.

5. The 2026 Way: Welcome Suica Mobile

Designed for iPhone Tourists

  • No need to visit a service center — set up on the plane or at home.
  • Supports "Suica Green Car" reservations directly in the app.
  • Validity: 180 days (much longer than the 28-day physical version).
Note: Balance is non-refundable. Make sure to spend it all at the airport convenience store before you leave Japan!
